The Bryan Museum Brass Ornament

Standing in Galveston’s historic East End, this building has a rich and storied history. It was built in 1895 as the Galveston Orphans’ Home and provided a home for more than 65,000 children. The Great Storm of 1900 heavily damaged the building; however, all who sought refuge within its walls survived. The orphanage was redesigned by architect George B. Stowe and reopened in 1902. After closing in 1984, the property became a private residence for several years and then stood vacant for nearly a decade. In 2013, J.P. and Mary Jon Bryan purchased the former Galveston Orphans’ Home and carefully restored the historic structure to house the Bryan Collection, one of the world’s largest collections relating to Texas and the American West. The Bryan Museum opened on June 15, 2015 as a nonprofit organization with a mission – to bring the history of Texas and the American West to life through art, education, and preservation. The museum’s collection, exhibitions, and educational history and literacy programs offer visitors the opportunity to explore the multicultural stories of the past while inspiring them to shape the stories of the future.
